Faculty Guide

Everything you need to create courses, build assessments, manage live sessions, and track learner progress on MidwayCME.

Creating a New Course / Activity

Courses (also called activities) are the foundation of your content on MidwayCME. Follow these steps to create one.

  1. 1
Navigate to My Courses. From the faculty sidebar, click My Courses, then click the Create New Course button in the top-right corner.
  2. 2
Fill in course details. Enter a descriptive title and description. Select the activity type that best fits your content: Enduring, Live, Blended, Committee Learning, Internet Searching, Journal-Based, Manuscript Review, Performance Improvement, or Test Item Writing.
  3. 3
Set credits and objectives. Enter the number of credits offered (e.g., 1.0, 2.5). Write clear educational objectives describing what learners will gain. Specify the target audience (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc.).
  4. 4
Set optional dates. Add a start date and end date if the course is time-limited. Leave blank for courses that are always available.
  5. 5
Publish when ready. Save the course as a draft while building content. When everything is in place, toggle the course to Published to make it visible to learners in the course catalog.

Adding Content to a Course

Once your course exists, populate it with learning materials. Each piece of content appears as an item learners work through.

  1. 1
Open the course edit page. From My Courses, click on the course title, then click Edit. Scroll down to the Content section.
  2. 2
Add content items. Click Add Content and choose the type: File (PDF, PPTX, DOCX), Video (paste a URL or upload), or Live Session (link an existing or new BigBlueButton session).
  3. 3
Set title and description. Give each content item a clear title (e.g., "Module 1 Slides") and an optional description to tell learners what to expect.
  4. 4
Arrange content order. Use the reorder controls on the edit page to arrange content items in the sequence you want learners to follow.
  5. 5
Link live sessions. When adding a live session as content, you can either select an existing scheduled session or schedule a new one directly. The session will appear in the course content alongside other materials.

Managing the Content Library

The Content Library (Faculty → Content) shows all your uploaded materials in one place. From here you can preview, manage, and remove content items.

  1. 1
Preview content. Click the View button or the content title to open an inline preview modal. Videos play directly in the browser with full playback controls — no download required.
  2. 2
Delete content. Click the Delete button on any content row, or use the Delete button inside the preview modal. A confirmation dialog appears before the item is permanently removed.
  3. 3
Filter and search. Use the search bar and type filter at the top of the page to quickly find specific content items by title or file type.

Creating Assessments

Assessments test learner knowledge and can be required for course completion. Build them directly within a course.

  1. 1
Add an assessment. From the course edit page, click Add Content and select Assessment. This creates a new assessment linked to your course.
  2. 2
Choose question types. Add questions using the supported types: Multiple Choice (single correct answer), Multi-Select (multiple correct answers), or Matching (pair items from two columns).
  3. 3
Set correct answers. For each question, mark the correct answer(s). For matching questions, define the correct pairs. The system uses these to automatically grade learner attempts.
  4. 4
Configure passing score and retakes. Set the passing score (e.g., 70%). Optionally enable retake options so learners can try again if they don't pass on the first attempt.
  5. 5
Preview before publishing. Use the Preview feature to take the assessment as a learner would see it. Verify that questions display correctly and answers are graded properly before making the course available.

Creating Evaluations & Using Templates

Evaluations collect learner feedback about the course. They are typically required before a certificate is issued. You can build evaluations from scratch or start from a pre-built template.

  1. 1
Add an evaluation. From the course edit page, click Add Content and select Evaluation. This opens the evaluation builder.
  2. 2
Choose question types. Add questions using: Rating (1-5 stars), Likert Scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree), Free Text (open-ended response), or Multiple Choice.
  3. 3
Use a template (recommended). Instead of building from scratch, click Browse Templates to open the template library. Select a pre-built template that matches your evaluation needs, such as "Standard CME Evaluation" or "Live Activity Feedback."
  4. 4
Customize template questions. After selecting a template, all its questions are loaded into your evaluation. You can modify, reorder, add, or remove questions to tailor it to your course.
  5. 5
Save and link to your course. Once saved, the evaluation appears as a content item in your course. Learners must complete it before receiving their certificate.

Tip: Templates save significant time for standard CME evaluations. Most accreditation requirements can be met by selecting an existing template and making minor adjustments.

Managing a Series

A series bundles multiple courses together into a structured learning path. Learners can enroll in the series and work through each course in order.

  1. 1
Create a series. From the sidebar, navigate to My Series and click Create New Series. Enter a title, description, and other metadata just like a course.
  2. 2
Organize with modules. Series are divided into modules (e.g., “Module 1: Foundations”). Each module groups related activities together. You can rename modules, reorder them, or add new ones from the series edit page.
  3. 3
Add activities to modules. Inside each module card, click the Add Activity button. Search for and select existing activities to include. Each activity appears within that module.
  4. 4
Set sequential completion. Enable sequential completion if learners must finish modules in order (e.g., Module 1 before Module 2). Leave disabled to allow learners to complete in any order.
  5. 5
Reorder and manage. Use the reorder controls to arrange modules and the activities within them. You can remove activities from a module at any time without deleting the activity itself.
  6. 6
Auto-evaluation (optional). On the series edit page, use the Auto Evaluation section to select a course evaluation template. This automatically applies the same evaluation to every activity in the series, saving time when all courses need identical feedback forms.

Viewing Reports & CSV Export

Reports give you detailed analytics on how learners are performing in your courses. Use them to identify difficult questions, track completion rates, and export data.

  1. 1
Navigate to Reports. Click Reports in the faculty sidebar. You will see a list of your courses and series that have assessment or evaluation data.
  2. 2
Course assessment reports. Click on a course to view its assessment report. You will see a per-question breakdown with success rates, correct/incorrect counts, and each learner's individual responses.
  3. 3
Series assessment reports. For series, the report aggregates data across all courses in the series. You will see overall summary statistics and per-course breakdowns with links to individual course reports.
  4. 4
Evaluation results. View aggregated learner feedback from evaluation responses. See rating averages, Likert scale distributions, and free-text comments to understand how learners perceived your course.
  5. 5
Download CSV export. Click the Export CSV button on any report to download a spreadsheet. The CSV includes summary statistics, question-by-question data, and individual learner responses for offline analysis.

Managing Live Sessions & Recordings

Live sessions use BigBlueButton for real-time video conferencing. Sessions can be linked to courses, recorded, and automatically made available for later viewing.

  1. 1
Schedule a live session. When adding content to a course, select Live Session. Set the session name, date, time, and duration. Optionally enable recording to capture the session automatically.
  2. 2
Start and manage the session. When it is time, click Start Session from the course page or the Live Sessions dashboard. You will join as the moderator with full controls.
  3. 3
Promote attendees for screen sharing. Inside BigBlueButton, you can promote any attendee to presenter so they can share their screen, upload slides, or use the whiteboard. This is useful for collaborative presentations.
  4. 4
Recordings are saved automatically. If recording is enabled, the session recording is processed after the session ends and automatically backed up to cloud storage (S3). It then appears as viewable content within the linked course.
  5. 5
View and share recordings. Recordings appear on the Recordings page and within the course content. Learners who missed the live session can watch the recording to complete the activity.
  6. 6
Attendance tracking. The system tracks which learners joined the live session and how long they attended. An 80% attendance threshold is used to determine if a learner participated sufficiently. View attendance data from the session details page.

Reviewing Learner Enrollment & Progress

Track who is enrolled in your courses and how they are progressing through the material.

  1. 1
View enrolled learners. From the faculty sidebar, click Students to see a list of all learners enrolled in your courses. You can filter by course to focus on a specific group.
  2. 2
Check individual progress. Click on a learner's name to see their detailed progress: which content items they have completed, assessment scores, and evaluation submission status.
  3. 3
Monitor assessment scores. View each learner's assessment results, including their score, whether they passed, and how many attempts they used. This helps identify learners who may need additional support.
  4. 4
Review evaluation responses. See whether each learner has submitted their course evaluation. Evaluation completion is typically required before certificate generation.
  5. 5
Completion and certificate status. The enrollment list shows each learner's overall status: In Progress, Completed, or Certificate Issued. Certificates are generated automatically once all requirements (content, assessment, evaluation) are met.
